Invisalign® Q & A

Why does teeth alignment matter?

Many people assume that straightening teeth is largely a matter of form over function. The reality is that straight teeth are not only more aesthetically pleasing; they also encourage better overall dental health.

The first reason is that crooked teeth present considerable hurdles in keeping tooth decay and gum disease at bay. If your teeth contain hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, plaque can build up in these areas, which allows harmful bacteria to wreak havoc on your teeth and gums.

Another reason to consider straightening your teeth is to encourage better alignment. Poorly aligned teeth, or malocclusion, can lead to problems with chewing or a TMJ disorder (TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint).

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative tooth-straightening system that uses clear aligners to move your teeth into a more desirable position. The aligners are a material called SmartTrack®, which firmly guides your teeth without irritating the tissues in your mouth.

If you opt for Invisalign, your provider at First Family Dental takes a digital 3D impression of your mouth and sends this data, along with your straightening goals, to the Invisalign lab. The Invisalign lab then custom manufactures your first set of aligners and sends them directly to you.

Moving forward, Invisalign sends you new aligners every two weeks, and you simply swap out your old ones with the new set. You wear your sets of aligners for at least 22 hours a day.

What alignment issues can Invisalign address?

Invisalign corrects some of the same alignment issues as traditional metal braces, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Gapped teeth
  • Crowded teeth

Even if you don’t have alignment issues, but you’re unhappy with how your teeth line up, the odds are that Invisalign can correct the problem.

What are the advantages of Invisalign?

There are many advantages to the Invisalign system, starting with clear aligners. Beyond the fact that your straightening system is largely invisible, there are many other benefits, including:

  • You can remove your aligners for eating and brushing (and special events)
  • Invisalign is easier on the soft tissues in your mouth
  • Fewer visits to the dentist for tightening, etc.

And when it comes to your timeline, Invisalign works as quickly, and sometimes more quickly, than traditional orthodontics.
